 Wooden Dummy

On this Wooden Dummy page you will find many crucial information about the
Wooden Dummy (Mook Yan Jong) or sometimes can call it Wooden Men.

       W. Chun students train their techniques on a training tool which is called Wooden Dummy or with the well-known
name Mook Yan Jong. As a real W. Chun practitioner, you should have one at your home. For being suitable for training,
a w. chun wooden dummy should be accurate in its measurements. If the measurements are inaccurate then, the student of W.
Chun will develop wrong postures which means that he will be defeated by others students for the reason above.
Important role constitutes the quality of wood. A good quality of wood must last at least 3 years and the wood must
be durable and tough.Taekwood is the most suitable wood for making a traditional w.chun wooden dummy and can find it in Indonesia
and Thailand. Yip Man discovered the movements on the Wooden Dummy and organized them into two versions.
The first one had 108 movements and the last has 116 movements. The Wooden Dummy is a good way to train
someone himself when doesn’t have a training partner. Practitioners can kick, hit, push and pull the dummy with
as much power as they can. The practitioner can adjust the height of a Wooden Dummy with putting the higher
arm at the level of his shoulder. The aim of training on the w. chun dummy is the following: The fighters (of this self
defense martial art) must face the centerline of the other fighters without they can face their centerline....

....The wooden dummies are designed in a such way that their arms are angled away from the centerline so the
student’s job is to move himself well, for taking good position and train himself on it. The features of a Wooden
Dummy are: it consists of a thick post with three arms and a bend leg. The two of three arms are in the same
level with the practitioner’s arms and the other one is lower in the middle of the Wooden Dummy. The Wooden
Dummy represents a human opponent without movement. The two wooden arms represent high attacks while
the lower arm represent middle attacks. The forward bend leg represents the leg of a human with main point
the knee. Furthermore, the aim of the dummy is to understand the practitioner the correct footwork, the suitable
angles which must take for making an ideal attack and the positions of his body. The empty-hand forms of W.
Chun are concluded in Wooden Dummy form. Also, practitioners use the Wooden Dummy form for training
themselves to fight and use their power in a very close range to the opponent. The practitioners improve their
Chi Sao technique on the dummy because they use the sticky hands form and also can use the palm-strike on it.
The follow wing chun dummy video includes the techniques on the wooden dummy by the Grandmaster William Cheung.
